Torque Converter ATF removal

Hi

I managed to get hold of a replacement TC for my transmission, my original one went bad causing a big problem  :(
The replacement has been stored for a while, there is some fluid still inside which doesnt look clean, how can I completely remove it and any
contaminants that may be present? I have tried tipping it upside down but cant seem to get it all out, is there any way of flushing out?

Hello there!

Torque Converters are nearly impossible to drain. VWAR Home page has the needed information to flush the ATF (Home page=> Technical=> Converter Oil).

Were it me......FIRST=> Replace the Torque Converter. SECOND=> Run the engine and top off the system. THIRD=> Perform the following steps to completely flush the system. 

Here is how you do it:

-Detach hose at oil tank outlet and drain oil into container
-Reattach house.
-Detach return hose at oil filler neck of oil tank and route into drain container.
-Start engine and run it at fast idle speed. While torque converter is being emptied, pour approximately 5 liters of ATF into the oil tank.
-When oil level in drain container has reaches 5 liters turn engine off and reattach hose.
-Recheck ATF level.

This is probably the best way to flush the system.

Seems to me that I was reading not too long ago that it is impossible to remove all the water from an unmounted tire (think torque converter here) by purely physical/handling means.  With that in mind, a system flush does seem the way to go.

    The siphoning method described in the manual is a bit slow. I do suspect you could improve it but you're halfway through a Flush Procedure just trying to fill the ATF system anyway to lubricate a "dry" converter.
