I'm having problems with the torque converter on my '68 semi auto, It's dumping oil from the torque converter and after replacing the seal has got better but it is still leaking. When I removed the first TC the brass bush was badly scored and damaged so put on my spare which looked a lot better but still had slight scoring on the brass bush, would this cause the leak? or make the TC run untrue?? has anyone had a new brass bush machined to fit their TC???

any help appreciated

Thanks
Paul

Tez,
Now that those bushes are NLA it's "scour the web" etc for NOS ones or do what you have suggested and get a bush machined.
I would suggest if the bush is scored then examine the TC support tube too. It may need reconditioning itself.

The TC could leak past a badly worn bush or a worn groove on the OD of the TC where the seal rides on it.

As for riding untrue, a bent flexplate coupled with a sloppy bush and not-so-hot torrington inside the TC would all play a part.

Have you phoned Long Enterprises to see if the may have a new one lying around?

All the bushes I have seen in Torque Converters have been fine...

I would try another torque converter...

what causes the wear Sean?
just lots of Miles?
or wrong type of ATF or contaminated ATF??

Thanks for the reply guys!
thanks for the tip off regarding long enterprises but I am in the UK and they will only ship internationally for a minimum $300 order so guess that's out the question, The only other option i have really is to try and get another TC but when buying 2nd hand theres no guarantees the bush wont be as bad. any ideas?? ???

Hiya tez,

If Long Enterprises has the bush, I'll be glad to act as a middleman.  You can order it from them, give them my address, and I'll ship it to you when it arrives here.  All for considerably less than $300!   ;)

Thanks for the offer bookwus! I might give them a ring tonight to see if it is the bush I need, I tried to call them earlier but then realised it was 2.04am in California! ( you'd think some people would answer the phone if there trying to sell something ;D ;D) I'll let you know what they say.

Tez ;)

I spoke to long enterprises but the bush they have listed is no longer available so back to square one, thanks for the offer Bookwus it was really appreciated ;)

Tez,
Try and PM "Crasher". He's UK based, has totally rebuilt his transmission and sourced stuff from all over. He may be able to point you to something.

Hiya tez,

I MIGHT be able to source a brass bushing.  It would help a great deal to know what VW parts number is associated with this part.  Anybody out there in VWARland have any info on numbers for this thing?

Mike,
That's good news!! I'll have a look at my (recent) ETKA. I know Steve (Crasher) has some that fiche that show a wealth of part No's. Pity, EVW had a listing for this bush a few years ago.

EDIT try this from Longenterprises : 001 323 611A

Hiya Sean,

Thanks!

The hook is baited and out in the water.  We'll see if I get any bites.

I struck out.

I contacted German Transaxle.  It turns out that they dumped most  of their AutoStick parts when they had to move their shop a couple of years ago.  No word on what might have happened to those parts.
