Hi all,
We recently picked up a 1970 VW Convertible auto-stick.  I'm already learning a lot on here...but have run into a little trouble.  The car won't shift while it is running.  You can put it in gear while it's turned off, but while it's running it just grinds.  I figure the clutch isn't operating properly.  I replaced all the AS vacuum lines and that didn't help.  I ordered a clutch servo repair kit.  I pulled the servo off today, rebuilt it, then bolted it back into place.  My trouble is getting the servo reconnected to the clutch arm.  Is there a trick to this?  Once I pull the servo arm out and put my finger over the vacuum port...I still have about 1/2" between the clutch arm and the eye.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  That linkage came undone very easily...I didn't anticipate such a hard time getting it reconnected.

Thanks!!
Travis

Well,
doing anything with the clutch servo isn't easy... and many times You do need three hands... lol

I believe what may be happening... is Your clutch isn't opening up far enough [disengaging]
so, You are trying yo select gear without the clutch disengaged..

I had this problem for a long time... until I sorted it all out....

Firstly, You should NOT be able to start the engine in gear.. that's illegal and dangerous
although it will help keep Your car going while you fix things...

as far as I can remember.. I used to unloosen the nut/bolt on the clutch arm..
then push the arm forward as far as it will go then do up the clamp tight..
fit the adjuster and adjust till You can select reverse with a crunch..
just another turn of the adjuster - select reverse without crunching.. YES
tighten the adjuster....  I know its virtually impossible to tighten it... lol

and Yes, I have taken the clutch servo off many times because I couldn't attach the adjuster...
these are made to test us... lol
