Hi All,

In connection with the revival of my 73' Autostick I installed a Carter Rotary Fuel Pump/Filter over the weekend but have not connected the positive lead. My intention is to use JEGS Fuel Pump Relay.

On other forums I have seen Fuel Pump Relay diagrams with 5 Wires ((i) Keyed 12V, (ii) Chassis Ground, (iii) Battery, (iv) Pump Positive, (v) Coil) however my Fuel Pump Relay has 4 connections ((i) Keyed 12V, (ii) Chassis Ground, (iii) Battery, (iv) Pump Positive). It does not have a lead to the Coil.

Other than maintaining continuous voltage it was my understanding that the Relay should be used as a cut-off in the event the engine is no longer running due to an accident or other event. With my 4 wire arrangement how would I accomplish this ? Should the Keyed 12v be connected elsewhere ?

Thanks

Hi
I don't know of the type of relay, I just use the standard Hella/Bosch 12 volt relay.. I have a switch under the dash to turn the electric pump OFF.. the pump is located under the fuel tank..
.. and when this switch is turned OFF and the ignition is turned ON, I have a bright orange light in the dash, which comes on telling Me the PUMP is turned OFF.. otherwise I can drive a short distance until the engine stops.. I had to Use a very bright LED lamp as I used to forget about it.. lol..

I have heard of having the ground to the pump connected to an oil pressure switch.. which I thought of a great idea.. when the oil pressure drops as when the engine stops, the fuel pump is switched off..
but just thinking about it... I'm not sure how it was done??
as when the normal VW oil pressure switch goes to ground to switch the  oil lamp in the speedo ON..  Not OFF..
You would need an extra switch to the engine oil pressure - You can get brass extensions to fit the engine oil pressure hole then place a VW oil pressure switch in it plus the switch for the fuel pump ground... but I can't remember how to do it??
Nothing is impossible just a darn sight harder.. lol..

cheers

I have been learning and it seems the Oil Pressure switch may not be the best option for a VW. In fact I understand many who use the oil pressure switch have override and/or fuel primer options due to low oil pressure.

As it turns out I have been directed to a 5 Terminal Fuel Cutoff Relay commonly found in the VW Rabbit and other VW's identified as Part # 321 906 059 C and wired as follows;

15 Keyed 12V
31 Chassis Ground
30 Battery 12V
87 Fuel Pump 12V
31b Trigger to Coil

I will post pictures of the install and report back with progress as things develop.

Thank you for replying.. expect many more VW AS questions in the near future.
Any leads on proper  air hoses for the vacuum servo etc.. ?

Hi LI,

Do a search for 'sources for autostick parts', the first post contains lots of links for all sorts of Autostick specific parts including the correct air hose, I bought some from Belmetric.com a while back, I just need to install it.

Hi
Many VW engine oil pressure switches will turn the oil lamp in the speedo On at times when the engine is idling, or the engine has just started etc..  The switches are Very inexpensive and I have replaced mine a few times. I even carry a spare oil switch as I had one that started to leak oil badly. Although, the carburetor will run for a while without the electric pump working, plus they go on & Off with the engine idling anyway...

cheers
