I was told by a friend in San Antonio, Texas that there is a way to trace the history of your car back to where it was made, original paint and owner history. Does any one know how to do this or where to go to search for it? I would like to get the history on my car. If I remember correctly she also told me that it is a way to help with the value of the classics for insurance purposes, but not sure on that one.

Buggerfly,
It's commonly known as a "birth certificate" for your VW. Pay some dinero along with your request to this mob and they send you back as much info as they have regarding build date, options (if ordered, but not dealer options) etc. BTW, they are not shady or fly-by-nighters - they are the real deal.

It's discussed (even a sticky?) on TheSamba I think. I can't remember much more than that...

Hiya bug,

The address is:

Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen
Brieffach 1003
Frau Neefe
Dieselstrasse 35
D-38436 Wolfsburg Germany

The fee for this is 30 Euros (although I heard recently this has been bumped up to 35 Euros).  The Automuseum will take credit cards (supply them with number and expiration date if you go that route), personal checks made out to the Stiftung AutoMuseum, or money orders.  You will also need to supply your car's VIN.  Allow some time (like a month) for delivery.  Do be aware that the information supplied is sometimes incomplete due to what the AutoMuseum terms, fragile records.

Hiya bug,

When you find out the current correct amount (and any other pertinent info) for a birth certificate, please return here and post it up so we can all be updated.  That's one of the real benefits of a forum like this - sharing the information!

I will definately do that as soon as I get the info. Will be more than happy to pass the info on to my fellow auto stick owners and all volkswagen owners as well. I might even get one for my dads car, he has a '72 fast back, fully automatic.

I wrote to Volkswagenwerks many years ago for information on a beetle
and they sent Me a letter in reply
and how much it would cost...
they also sent Me the "birth certificate"
with nothing on it...

I'll have to see if I can find it.....
