And another of the interior.  These are all I happen to have at work.  But I really haven't taken all that many pics of the car.  I just enjoy driving it around.

Ok, didn't go out to my car at lunch yesterday.  This afternoon I was at home and decided to take a look at the door post.  What year did they start putting the sticker with the date of manufacturer on them?  Aren't those stickers the "legaleze" for saying that the car was made with all the safety items up to that date?  And emission controls?

I am wondering as mine just states that it was manufacturered to the specifications at the time of manufacturer and no dates (it says it a bit differently but this is all I can remember).

So will have to wait for my "birth certificate" to figure out when it was made.

Hiya Carl,

Re:  the doorjam sticker.  It's my understanding that this sticker was applied to cars starting in 1968.  I'm thinking that you should have one.  But, let's be clear.............that's only my understanding.  I could well be wrong about the sticker.  Let me do some looking around and see if I can dig up some confirmation or denial of that originating date.

Hiya Carl,

Found this.............

"FYI, the doorjamb label was a federally mandated item; any new car from any MFR sold in the USA needed to have a similar label. All info on it was specified by the gov't. Some might have been in other locations on the car but the door jamb was a common place. I think they were first required for the 1970 model year, though sometimes federal regulations only take effect on certain dates (i.e. Sept. 1 1969)... They are still required, and are usually referred to as a "Safety Compliance Placard".

I can't vouch for the authenticity, but it does seem plausible.

If my beetle truly is an early '68, made in '67, probably they were just using the "generic" sticker that I have on my car.  It probably wasn't until later in the year that they started putting the dates in as the safety items and emission requirements changed so frequently that they wanted to date their cars.  What kind of sticker is on a '67?

Dunno for sure, but I'd guess that the metal plate in the trunk area would be the only plate/sticker in 67.

Hi
Yes the VW automatic badges were used on all beetle autosticks in Australia.
I have heard of 2 or 3 Autostick badges on 68 beetles in Australia
whether they came on the cars or were purchased later I don't know..

they can only be used on engine covers without the air vents...
as the same 3 holes are used for: Volkswagen - VW Automatic - Automatic stick shift

the stickshift badges are available on the used parts market....

cheers

LEE

PS: 1968 VW model year = 1st Aug 1967 to 31st July 1968
cars made after 31st july 1968 are 1969 VW models...

Ok, took some pics the other day.  One is of the door sticker.  No date given.  I have requested a "birth certificate" so we will see what that says as for manufacture date.

Keep us filled in how this goes.

I was thinking of you the other day when I ran into a girl driving a 68.  It too had the "VWAUTOMATIC" decklid badge.  So, I chatted with her in the parking lot.  Opened by telling her about the rarity of this badge (properly applied, of course) and asked if she was driving an AutoStick.  Indeed, she was!  However, it turned out that her car was bought (by her) under a salvage title and was actually a composite of quite a few different cars by a local VW shop.  I'm now thinking that they just slapped the decklid badge on (with a lot of other parts that had no business being there).  But seeing that "VWAUTOMATIC" on a 68.......................just had to ask.

I received a letter in the mail yesterday regarding my birth certificate.  It appears that the micro fiche for that time period is crumbling and is unreadable.  I sent an email to the person who signed the letter asking if there was really no way of reading it.

From the wording of the letter, it appears that they are going to refund me the money, but they want an international account number.  So will have to see if they can put the refund back on my card.

I am so disappointed.  Anyone know of any other place to try to see what date my bug was manufacturered?

Hi MIke & Stephanie

AS far as i know...
Autosticks were called semi automatics in Australia...

and I've never seen the stickers over here....

only the Volkswagen decal in Ovals...
