Well My Son has welded in a vacuum take off on another inlet manifold with good heatrisers..

the only difference is He welded the pipe out horizontal...

Do You think this will make any problems????

I had drilled the hole at the angle I wanted although much smaller
than the pipe to be welded into place...

Hiya Lee,

We're talking about the 12 mm vacuum port just below the carburetor base flange on the intake manifold, right?

I'm thinking that the main reason VW had those ports positioned slightly upwards was simply to accomodate the routing of the vacuum hose.  The vacuum draw at that point in the intake manifold should more than take care of any oxygenated gasoline escaping through the vacuum port and into the hose.

But if the hole drilled at that point is substantially smaller than 12 mm it could act like a restrictor in the vacuum pathway.

thanks Mike
the hole has been drilled out by My Son and the 18mm pipe welded into place..
I thought the pipe was welded in at an angle so it cleared the distributor etc
and probably for the hose to be in a certain place...
but it looks like it clears everything OK..
I have pics of it but cannot find them on My computer...lol

winter has just started here but 16C isn't too bad...
I hope the sun comes out and the wind drops.... lol

while I replace the inlet manifold I am going to place an oil cooler over the fan
in the shroud..  I also have an oil filter accessoriy and an oil thermostat too..
not sure whether I'll fit those too...?? Yet...

cheers

PS: I hate the idea of having mY car off the road...

Hi Mike
Well the Winter weather is here already with snow on the southern mountains of the eastern side of Australia..
and winds from the antartic blowing....

I have taken pics of the inlet manifold but can't find them and I can't download them from the camera again..
I may have saved the pics in the camera memory and not on the memory card..??

anyway it painted with heatproof paint ready to fit..

Lee,

I'm suprised of your color choice! Perhaps something in green or maybe yellow?  ;)

Hiya Lee,

I'm thinking you'll be OK with that IF it clears the distributor.  And you could always cut the port back if you had to.

Dave took the words right outta my mouth.  I was expecting technicolor.  Geez!  Paint it red.  It'll make the car go faster!

I had already bought the Heat proof Metallic silver paint...

Maybe yellow would have been OK..

My original inlet manifold was first painted yellow...
years ago... then changed to white High Heat then silver..
I think the white does look great or light gray...

Oh well... next time....

I have replaced My coil with another one painted YELLOW....
and have painted the old one green....

Winter is really here with a vengenace today...
the Icy winds are going to make it difficult to work on My beetle..
although I have a nice warm jacket etc and gloves..
Now if i could keep My tools nice and warm...
that would be a PLUS... lol

Then I got a white Camero and I learned what fast really is.
Just popped in to say hi and saw that
Could not leave w/o mentioning something about Our ColOURful Engine Painter friend down under I love how he paints everything really makes the Bug spring off the page in pic's

Its good to see that My painting is appreciated....
if thats the correct word.. ;D ;D ;D

I replaced the coil with a Yellow One with a green bracket..
replaceing the gold colored one...
Gold has gone out of fashion.... lol

its now been painted green...lol

Winter has arrived right on schedule...
-1C for a few mornings...
and down to 17C during the day...
Not too bad if the sun is shining...

It has snowed already on the mountains and the snow season has started early..
The mountains around here only get a bit of snow
just so the wind can blow off it....   lol

I'll have to get the work on My beetle finished ASAP...
before its too cold to pick up a spanner..lol
I'll have to make a spanner warmer..lol
and wear gloves....

LEE do not take offence I do enjoy the colorful way you did your engine I too own the first year Automatic stickshift came out so I refer to your engine pics often.

I love this comment

No offence taken...
I just can't help Myself with the spray cans...  :D :D
Yellow is My favorite color at the moment..
but I'm finding yellow in spray cans needs to be shaken for about 1/2 hour
before you use it... sometimes longer... Yellow seems to have more solvent
in it...

anyway I've been working on My beetle nearly every day
the temp is over 20C and the Sun is shining....
about 4pm it starts to get cold... and the spanners get colder... :D

so I have been lucky I've had so many good days...
I did also work on the engine one night about 10pm
and it didn't seem cold....
but its now impossible to work on it after 5pm due to the cold...
its 4C outside now at 10.45pm..  may drop to -1C in the morning...

I've had lots of electrical and carby problems after replacing My inlet manifold.
I've gone back to a condensor on the Distributor instead of the High Energy electronic ignition.. I still have points... at the moment....

cheers

I don't know how accurate this info is but just yesterday my mechanic (an old time VW mechanic) mentioned that VW put the 12mm pipe at an angle to help prevent any fuel from flowing into the pipe and find its way to the CV valve. He stated any fuel would drain back into the manifold due to the angle of the pipe. I realize the fuel should be more or less atomized at this point, so maybe he was referring to dripping fuel from misadjusted carbs, or carbs in need of repair.
Just thought I would share this recent info.
When I  was 15 I wanted a Ghia....It only took me 47 years to get one!   1970 Karmann Ghia Autostick.

Yes,
i have thought of that..
I even thought of having the pipe go vertical so no fuel will go up the pipe..
but I believe that You have it correct - dripping or overflowing  carburetor...

there shouldn't be any actual Fuel going past that pipe..
I even drilled the hole at an angle... lol
I was more concerned that if it went straight up it may be against the carby or out to the dizzy... lol

cheers

Sorry no pics but when the mechanic rebuilt my AS the day I bought it after my eventful drive home and chunks of Magnesium in the engine compartment etc see former posts for full story lol
I had to replace my generator and the fan belt pully was wiggling on new gen post (axel?) anyway I painted the bracket and the plate that goes to the fan housing blue the Mechanic used High gloss black which I was gonna stay with but now my engines a bruiser (Black and Blue) hehe will need to get some high temp blue to go hawg wild on the rest of the engine but its not high priority I did have to replace the OEM air cleaner as the weighted flap on the drivers side inlet tube was smacking my coil and wearing through it plus the rattle was driving me nuts I am learning the sound of my beetle and added noises aren't helping so now I have this tiny round Air cleaner do i need to add any vacuum to it? I seen mention in other posts there was a vacuum line running to the air cleaner, this may have been post 68? as there was only the engine oil breather hose and a fat duct hose running to the OEM Air cleaner which I tried to connect a small breather to the oil filler portion and the tube is too short for the after market breather so I'll need to add an extender to that if i wish to use a breather as for the fat tube that ran to my engine heater boxes I simply re routed that to the other hole in my upper engine cover to close that added heat off.
with the after market Air cleaner do I need to have the oil breather hose connected still?
I see others w/o it but they are standard not AS,
hope I was not too confusing in my questions.
