Hello All,
Is there supposed to be any type of gasket on the autostick temp sender or on the backup switch? I am referring to a gasket on or slipped onto the threaded part that is screwed into the transmission.
Both my senders were leaking and were not even hand tight. I am hoping their looseness was the cause of the leaks, but I wondered if maybe a gasket might be missing.
I won't be able to confirm if tightening is all that was needed because my Ghia is now apart.
Thank you

Hiya auto,

Here's a picture of the OEM switches as they came off the AutoStick transaxle...........

Notice that each does have a thick compression type washer.

Hi,
Copper washers on supposed to be on both. I'll post dimensions later if the frozen wasteland of the shed isn't too icy.

Hey Guys!
Thanks for the pictures and the info. Looks like good old copper or aluminum washers in the best VW tradition. This helps me a great deal. My car is in my neighbors garage where some engine and other work is being done. I will check for the washers at my next opportunity. Thanks.

they look like aluminium washers...
but copper will probably do the job...

is the two prong switch for the reversing lamps??

and does anyone know whether that switch will fit into a 1968 autostick???

I'm not absolutely sure, but I'd be willing to bet that it does, in fact, fit a 1968 AS tranny.  And let me read a little more into your question Lee.............I'm thinking that Bugs (at least in 1968) in Australia did not come equipped with back-up lights.  Right?  And you might be considering retrofitting the switch and the lamps?  If that is the case, I'd imagine that you'd be good to go by getting your hands on the switch and a USA spec wiring diagram.  I really don't think it would be too terribly difficult to install a back-up light system.

Lee,
     Later than '71 anyway.

My spare box (68 manufacture, Aus delivery) has the groove in the shift rod for the reverse light switch. Remove the plug and get a torch and you should be able to see it when you shift in and out of reverse.

Yes,
I'll have to try that Sean...
I was thinking of trying out the 3 prong long switch in the reverse hole..
using washers to shim it out...
