Hi

Im looking for an AS transmission for my '71 Ghia, if you've seen my post in the technical section you'll see what issues I've had. :'(

So Im looking for either a complete unit or just the bell housing, torque convertor, clutch carrier and clutch as my own tranny
worked fine up until my torque convertor went bad.

Ive searched high and low in the UK but without success Ive posted wanted ads on VZi and the Samba, Karmann Ghia owners club site etc... at this rate I'll have to convert to manual which may be my last resort option.

Can anyone help please.

Hiya Air,

As I mentioned in our PMs, I'd certainly be willing to scout out parts here in the States.

But one cannot get too far away from the shipping costs involved in a deal like that.  Possibly just the bellhousing components?

Anyway, if things don't seem to be progressing, or you're getting dirty down desperate, remember that you might use this as Plan B.

Hi Mike

A friend of mine is importing a couple of buses from California he has said that I can put the tranny or bellhousing inside one so the shipping would be free BUT I have to find something close to his contact in California and the ship leaves in 5 days  :( :(

Will a V-dub beetle A.S. work for you? I got 2 from PO of my 69 Autostick. Live in Redondo Beach, CA... Don't know much about them-wrapped in plastic-heavy.Lemme know.

Hi Clusterbug

Yeah that should work, do you know if they were working units, the bizarre thing is my Ghia came from that area before it was imported to the UK - ironic!

At the least I need the bellhousing , clutch/clutch plate, torque convertor as my transmission was working ok.

The place where my friends buses are shipping from is Oakland, is that far from you?

Thanks
Steve

Steve,
There is a fella who owns a "volksfarm" and runs a VW business near me. His name is Nick and he runs www.volksparts.com.au ...he had 16 A-S transmissions/bits in storage. You may want to have a chat. Sea-mail to the UK is still an option via Australia Post.

IIRC Redondo is in greater LA, Oakland up San Francisco way. 400 odd miles but UPS/FEDEX is cheap inside the USA.

Also, check www.exedy.com.au . They still list the clutch pressure plate/disc : http://www.exedy.com.au/SpecSheet.aspx?SpreadsheetRowId=65123 .You can email their home and ask if that is still available.

Airhead.
Steve's right. I am too far from Oakland. I'd go by his options. You're getting closer!! Good Luck!

Steve,
Any joy? John (Moxon) help you out?

If not : http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=127400

The rust will buff out and he's got the carrier/clutch/pp/T-O in the one unit. You can ditch the Starter if the weight is reaching critical wallet mass!

Hi Sean

John gave me a couple of contacts I emailed them but no joy, likewise with Nick.

Ive come across a guy in the UK that may have one to sell trouble is people
think they are worth more than they actually are because of their rareity they dont realise that
you can pick them up for $100 in the states. This guy has everything, control valve, complete
tranny, IRS half shafts, gear lever, autostick speedo, front spindles disks and calipers all from
a late '60's beetle, hes even got a set of sway-a-way front and rear anti-roll bars and polyurethane bushes!

Transmission was removed in 1989 and stored since.

My car has ground to a halt now as everything is on hold until I can sort out the tranny  :(
just have to keep looking and hope something turns up. How I envy the guys in the U.S there
seems to be plenty around there.

Cheers

Steve,
What about Kona Fleming (kekonaii) in TheSamba Classifieds? He's got 7, $95.00 each and ships worldwide....if he can do that, shipping to your mate in Oakland would be a semi-snap...maybe even see if he's got the complete B/H as a unit for sale?

Food for thought? Only an e-mail away.....

Regards
Sean

Two of My spare gearboxes [one now in My beetle]
the owners wanted $250-$300 for them...

I ended up getting one for $50 and the other for $100..[this one complete]
the later being about 800 kms away...
but eventually I found a local who knew someone coming My way..
so although I paid petrol money... the goods were in great shape...

You can be lucky

Hi Sean

Thanks for that have emailed him for TC , bell housing, clutch carrier and clutch and shipping cost to UK, hopefully it should be quite reasonable as I imagine most of the weight is in the tranny part itself which I dont need, will keep you posted.
