Newbie here and all ready wanting info.  Here goes  I have a 73 T1 and wanting to put autostick in. The mount for the ATF resvivoir (SP)filler neck, any dimensions on where the hole in fenderwell is supposed to be?  This panel does not have the hole for the fill tube to be in the motor compartment.  Can cut it random but I'm sure some one could give me some dimensions on location.  Anyone with suggestions

Sean, when you do the measuring a picture would probably help Walt a bunch.  Walt, also know that the hole for the ATF filler neck is an oblong kinda thing.

Yes Bjorn contacted me and we got things worked out as you can see..  I appreciated your help. 

By all means a picture would help.  I do understand the hole is ellicptal thats why the question was asked.  I could make a hole larger than what is needed but thats not right.  Was wondering and assumed that the hole mounting the tank  was critical for correct fluid level readings on the stick. If that statement makes sense. 

Have done a lot of reading on this site and find you people a lot more knowledgeable than other sites.  Not wanting to hurt anyones feeling but like you folks post a lot of vw charcaters dont know squat about autosticks.

The main problem with getting advice over the internet is that you can't face-to-face with the guy giving the advice.  If you could chat in person you would also have the opportunity to size the guy up as to whether he knows what he's talking about.  I see an awful lot of negative comments from the "need for speed" crowd about the AutoStick.  Others parrot these thoughts without ever having had actual experience with an AutoStick.  Compound those situations with many folks (on general VW forums) posting up their opinions as facts and you can see that getting reliable advice can be a bit of a crapshoot.

Here at VWAR you know that most of the folks you'll be talking to are actual AutoStick owners with hands on experience.  We also try to be pretty darn objective about the AutoStick.  Even though most of us really like these little cars we recognize that they do have limitations and that they are not for everybody.  So, go ahead and ask the questions Walt; we'll try to give you a hand and not a load of BS.

We have had a few members who have relocated the ATF reservoir.  Interesting that you should bring up its orientation insofar as getting a reliable ATF level reading on the stick.  I'm inclined to think that an accurate reading would tolerate some moving around of the tank and neck.  But I'd also be inclined to think the original factory orietation is your best bet unless you're willing to do a little experimenting with the tank and dipstick.

well, I've come to believe that someone held the ATF tank and then they built the car around it....
as i found it very difficult to bolt back into position...  
the lower brackets bolt to the rear bumper mounts...
I've tried for many years without success in getting them all bolted on...\
at first i had one bolt.... then two.... then 3..... lol

as mentioned- in other forums - a new person pops up who knows nothing and asks questions etc for a few weeks..
then He starts to tell people how to do things... when We all know He knows nothing at all about it.... lol

Just remember Walt.. Nothing is impossible... just a darn sight harder...

I have EVA foam all around the engine bay over the roof , inside the doors, under the fenders..
all around the engine and above the engine... to help stop noise and stone chips...

      I need to find the two pieces for the CV and the ATF tank, I can't find them at the moment . The hole in the other piece for the vac pipe (CV to servo), LHS in my pic, is 28mm diameter and the centre is 16mm down from crease line on the firewall join and 36mm from the side, the other one is 50mm wide by 25mm high. The centre of the 25mm circle closest to the side piece is 30.5mm and (I need to re-verify this) 92.5 mm down from the crease line.

I'll keep hunting up those other two bits..

       I found those two bits of metal. They fell into another box and have remained hidden until today!
