Hi everybody

I own a 72 1303 cabrio and after a long internal and external debate I have chosen to keep it as an autostick due in part to this webpage.

I am going to start with the mechanics and would like to know if there is any owners manual or repair manual in the web for my car.

Hey!  We have the same car - 72 autostick verts.    So far, I have found very little on line for manuals, and have resorted to the paper Bentley manuals.

I have the Haynes manual for the 1303 but it does not bring much about the cabrio top or the autostick.

Never heard about the Bentley manuals. Are they good?

By far better.  They are the offical VW repair guide from what I understand.  There is a huge section on the autostick.  Not so much the convertible top though.

The Robert Bentley manuals were used by VW of America when repairing Volkswagens.  Th Only drawback is that they do Use ALL of the special VW Tools.... Most of these tools are not available to the public....

The suggestions made so far in this thread are good ones.  However, you would be doing yourself a BIG favor if you realize that there is NO perfect source for AutoStick information.  Really, the best you can do is to start collecting different manuals which, in part, cover the AutoStick.  The best technical manual is the Bentley.  It is a compilation and a distillation of VW published material.  While it is the most technically comprehensive it is not complete.  Also look for Haynes, Clymer (now out of print), and other sources as they may pop up.  
Now for a big secret...............  VW dealer mechanics used repair guides published by VW.  These guides were broken down into sections (which were actually complete unto themselves) and kept together in a large binder.  These repair guides are still available - if you know who to go see.  Check with automotive literature dealers - they just might have the section on service and repair of AutoSticks laying around.
