Hello all,

I am minutes away from buying an automatic Ghia and don't know thing about them. So I said to myself I can always convert to manual. Then I found this site and thought I'd see if anyone can help.

My statement about converting wasn't meant to upset everyone here, it was just an automatic reaction I had (and I'm probably not alone).

So I ask, please help educate me about these machines so I can better decide whether or not to convert a car that seems to have a somewhat large group of passionate followeres. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I bought the car anyway and at this point I plan to keep the auto in the car and learn more about them. I am suprised though that I didn't get at least one comment as there dosen't seem to be very many autos out there.

To my best understanding this trans as well the car has been very well maintained and I'm planning to drive the car across the country. I'll post with the results of the trip and my hopefully new friendship with an auto stick.

Congrats on your new autostick!  I faced basically the same dilemma when I purchased my car, whether or not to convert it to a manual.  My car was rescued after being left in a field for 20 years, most of the original parts were still on it and working, except the transmission was shot.  After consulting some friends and people that know how to work on them, I decided to leave mine an autostick.  I figured that it would be worth more restored closely to original, and that it would be unique being an AS.  Good luck on your trip and have fun with your new car.

I am new to autosticks myself.  I have mine running but I am still doing some fixup work before I turn it over to the kid.   Mine is a 1970 model, I have installed a dual port motor and other that a couple of leaks it seems to work fine.

Does anyone know of a source where you can determine how many AS Ghias were produced in a particular year?  I have a '70 Convertible AS Ghia and was wondering what the production numbers were.

Was the AS first offered in Ghias in '68 like the Bug?
