I have another question. Is most of the gearbox and related autostick parts interchangeable throughout the years? I know they added a Park position in 73, but what else changed? I have a chance to buy a 68 autostick Bug with a perfect transmission for a good price, but I dont wanna get it if I cant use the parts on my 74. Thanks again... John

I believe they are all the same...  I have a 1968 model and it doesn't have a park position but I'm sure everything else is the same....  If the clutch is kept adjusted then it should last indefinately.... also I always use a gearbox additive in all the vehicles I have ever owned, and never have any gear box problems.
Friction Modified oil additives help stop the internals inside the gearbox from wearing out.  This is for the gearbox ... NOT for the torque converter oil...   cheers :)

'72 Super Auto

There have been a few changes in The Auto-Stick. From '71-down, The Auto-Stick has two ATF temperature sensors while from '72-up, there is only one ATF temperature sensor (thus the bellhousing is slightly different). On the '75 Auto-Stick ('75 was the final year for The Auto-Stick), the bellhousing was changed again, this time for accessing the torque convertor/drive plate mounting bolts. Gear ratios for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and Ring/pinion correspond to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and R&P for the manual according to the year of the vehicle. You can retrofit the parking lock onto a '68-72 Auto-Stick (just have to hunt for the parts though). Hope that helps.

After 72, there is big modifications on the main shaft, on the gear carrier and the nose cone.  (The even that on mechanical gearbox.)  The superior left fixing screw of the motor is so different. A lot of parts are not interchageable between the old ones and the new ones gearbox.
It is possible to change an after 72 by a 68.  It is necessary to change the nose.  To set up the nose after 72, it is necessary to cut the fixing screws of the front transmission mount. They are too long.
