I have a 74 auto stick and a big problem.  I don't have a lot of experience working on cars but I am learning.  I had a big fire a while ago and now I have to repair everything in the engine compartment.  I am in the process of rewiring everything and I need to know how to wire the synchro (I think that that is what it is called, the control unit for the trans).  I also need to know if there is some switch that it is wired to (my chilton book is not cutting it).  I know this is vague but if you think you know what I mean I am all ears.

Thanks

Hi,
Sorry to hear that you Had a Fire in your engine bay...
The "vacuum/electric clutch control valve"  has two wires going to it.
One wire goes to the "Neutral" start switch , where it just continues on to the gearshift lever switch..  I don't know why it actually goes to the "neutral start" switch as it just connects straight onto the wire from the gearshift switch..  The Other two wires on the "neutral start" switch are Power wires from the ignition switch to the starter motor, so the gearbox has to be in neutral beore the starter motor will go.
I can't help with colors etc as I have completley rewired My car.
but its the only wire going towards the engine from the neutral start switch, which is located on the LHS front of the gearbox...
The other wire to the "vacuum/electric clutch control valve' can go to the power side of the ignition coil.  If the engine stops when You move the gearlever, its on the incorrect terminal of the coil.. as You will have shorted out the ignition condenser.  If Your Car has an electronic ignition You will have to find a Power wire...
Let Me know how You go..

Hiya Icheesei,

Lee pretty well summed up the wiring of the Control Valve (proper name) which controls the vacuum to the clutch servo.  However, I'd take a moment to point out that the inside of that control valve contains thin rubber and plastic parts.  If they have been heated in your recent engine fire they may well be no good at all.

I would suggest a couple of courses of action...........

1.  Go to www.vwbooks.com and get yourself a copy of the Robert Bentley Official VW Service Manual.  Look for the orange cover.  Costing about $32US this will cover everything you will need to know.  AND...it has pictures for the visual learners among us.  MUCH MUCH better than a Chilton's.

2.  Using the abover Bentley take your Control Valve apart and insure that it is in working condition.

3.  Verify Lee's direction via the wiring diagram in the Bentley.

Then you ought to be ready to run!
