OK, I know this is off the topic.  I am having to replace the dash pad on my 70 AS and I really cannot find any info on how to go about removing the old one?  I have seen one guys bug that was customized and he had just completely removed the dash pad and painted the metal dash, and fabricated a instrument cluster and glove box door, now I'm not sure that is legal?  Last question on interior, I have the original seatbelts front and rear and one is bad on each, all the mechanisms are working fine, now does anyone know where i might be able to get the web/strap material replaced?

Sorry I can't help about the dash mat as We only had them for one year -  the 1976 standard beetle.  Many people take them off so I can't see them being illegal.  You cannot do anything to seat belts as they have to be approved by the Safety or Automobile manufacturers in each country.
If I imported a brand new car from japan to Australia, the seat belts are cut in half when it arrives in Australia, so they cannot be used, they must be an Australian approved seat belt..   That may not happen in Your country , but seat belts are designed to save lives, and have to be approved,  also Seat Belts in cars that have been crashed also have their seat belts cut in half...  so I don't believe You will be able to buy the webbing...

Hiya dmc,

With respect to the dash.......  Removing the old dash pad is not at all complicated.  It's held in place with several bolts which can be accessed from the trunk.  I did mine without any outside instruction.  Sort of a hit and miss approach.  But honestly, it's not rocket science.  One measure I would suggest is to make sure that you have a new glove box retaining ring and the plastic rivets for its attachment.  All parts are available through West Coast Metric, including a new dash pad.

As to seatbelts........Lee makes a good point.  Your seatbelts should be in excellent condition.  Were it me I'd go to any number of online suppliers and buy all-new belts for the car.  It simply does not pay to mess around with old stuff in this situation.
