69 AS Stalls with new carb

I recently acquired a 69 AS with a 1500cc engine.  I just finished rebuilding the engine with new 85.5 cylinders. This weekend I just put in a new Solex/Brosal Carb from California Imports.  When I shift from netutral into any gear, the car stalls unless I give it some gas at the same time I'm shifting.   The idle is already set pretty fast.  I also just put in a new AS servo diaphragm and adjusting the solenoid control valve doesn't seem to help the problem with the stalling.  Any suggestions?

Hiya bfleck,

The first thing which comes to my mind is the possibility that you may be having some problems with your distributor and its advance.  Are you by any chance running a 009?
If you are running a dizzy with a vacuum advance, is the vacuum tube hooked up correctly and is the base plate in the distributor responding to the vacuum?
Just a couple of random ideas.

Mike,
do You think that the engine ignition timing is OUT....
or retarded too much....??
Air/Fuel mixture incorrect??

I shouldn't think that the distributor would advance when just changing gear... [unless the engine is revved]..

nothing else comes to mind...

Hiya bfleck,

Geez, Lee is absolutely correct.  I shoulda read read your original post a little more carefully.  Distributors can cause all kinds of problems on acceleration after a gear change.  Just slapping it into gear is a different kettle of fish however.

Tell you what..........go back to the main page here at VWAR and link to TroubleShooting.  Take a good look at #5.  That could well be your problem.  Vacuum is the lifeblood of the AutoStick.
