clutch not engaging

Hullo all,
I have a 68 semi auto beatle which I have spent too long restoring. When reconditioning the engine we replaced the vacuum hoses with non vacuum hoses. After a while this seemed to cause the "Ker Thump" when the clutch engaged.
I replaced the hoses and now the clutch will not engage at all. I had trouble getting the vacuum hose and the car hasn't been moved for a few months.
Your advice will be appreciated.
