Well Jeff Wee,
I hope its just a loose connection to the coil, condenser etc...
or a fuel blockage....
I hope its not the transmission.....
Air cleaner not full of oil???
My chromed air cleaner had the breather hose attached to it, and oil was pumped up into the foam air filter, eventually blocking it....
The engine never really stopped...

I bought a new chromed foam air filter, and now have a tee piece in the breather hose, where oil can drip under the engine....

Jeff,
Well, this could range from simple to complex! A couple of things you can check fairly easily...

1. Do you have fuel in that plastic filter when it conks out? Does the "level"
   change?

2. When it conks out, is your carby iced up?

3. Pull off the distributor cap and check the points aren't fried. Check the cap for cracks. As Lee has mentioned, no broken/frayed wires or connections to and from the coil/distributor

4. Coil screamingly hot?

Does it start and run again just fine after it's stopped for a bit? I'd recommend a strip/clean/blowout of the carb and passages etc with carby cleaner and compressed air.
A lot of electrical checks require an ohm meter or a test light so let's stay away from that stuff for now.

In my 4spd, this problem turned out to be the carb.  I had had it in for a full tune up, and the mechanic mentioned the carb was on it's way out.  Driving down the freeway, suddenly it didn't want to run right.  It lost almost all power, and only by flooring it was I able to maintain enough speed to get off the freeway.  The moment the clutch was in and I let off the gas, the motor died out.  Swapped in a new carb, and the problem never came back again.

Jeff:

I'm guessing you do a lot of text/Instant Messaging.

You may want to try running your posts through spell check first.  They are a bit difficult to read - at least for old geezers that don't use that stuff!

Thanks!

Yes,
I have changed My air filter to one with louvers around it so the water shouldn't get in...
My other filter had gauze around the outside, and with the lid stand offs,
water would be a problem....
only My problem was oil pumped up the breather hose, into the air cleaner
.... not good....

I checked out many beetles at the Big VW Show in Sydney over easter...
and most engines didn't have anything fancy for the engine air breather..
some had small gauze filters etc...
so it looks like I'm the only one with an oil up the breather hose problem...
