Grinding!

Hi All!

My 1302s autostick is finally on the road again! It spent a long year being rid of old rust and also got a respray and new interior!

Driving to my mechanic for the final touches was a wonderful experience....

However ( as always is the case...), on the way there the transaxle developed a grinding noise. I once had to swap a gearbox on a manual cos of the same headache inducing grid! The problem that time was that the nuts holding the gear shaft bearing tight in place had loosened! we only discovered this when we took off the nose cone, with the box out of the car!

Anyway, thanks to VWAR forum we manage to make the autostick shifts as smooth as can be, in fact it's a dream, no thuds and bangs anymore!
The mechanic who used to work on these cars in UK was really pleased!

However (again!), the AS was hiding yet another surprise! When all was well, the selector rod slipped out of place. The car was stuck on L-drive. No other gear could be selected, not even put in N. it was like the coupling gave way on the manual boxes! the gearlever was moving about  as if no gear was selected so the car could be started in gear!!

The mechanic, a sly old fox, had a go at it his way! He loosened the large bolts on the transmission frame, cut the front transmission mounting off the chassis, pushed  transmission and engine backwards (luckily the car has a bulge type rear apron, but he says taking off the exhaust on a normal apron, works as well) and managed to open the nose cone of the gear box , and shift the selector back in place!

All is now ok except for the grinding! It grinds when on gear, even if it is stationary with the hand brake on! i suspect a worn bearing!

Anyone had a similar prob?
joy ur buggin!!

Hi,
The grinding can come from the copper and brass bushes inside the gearbox.  as the Bentley manual tells of the hypoid oil used in VW gearboxes causes corrosion in copper/brass bushes...
This only occurs if the gearbox has been standing or stored..
My gearbox was very noisy, then just dropped down to an acceptable level
I couldn't hear the radio, now i can..
The transmission is very noisy in LOW gear, but can be nearly noise free or noisy in Drive 1 and n Drive 2... and in neutral...

I have been pondering whether using a gearbox treatment / oil additive (like Slick50) might help lower the noise. I have a manual bug on which i used it. However i also found out that Slick50 have also an Automatic transmission treatment to be used in the torque convertor sytem!
Has anyone tried this?
joy ur buggin!!

I have used aproduct called NULON here in Australia in My ATF fluid...
but I used a Moly based product and squirted in 4 syringes full of it..
It was thick and black and stick, a bit like Lithium based Moly grease only as a thick oil...  It has made a difference...
and will probably stop any wear in the gearbox..
The product was called PRO-MAR from the US I believe...
It could be used in gearboxes and engines...
I would like to get some to put in My replacement gearbox when i get it...
I have done about 500kms in My car with the noisy gearbox...
and it seems to be getting quiter on the highway..
still a bit noisy around town and in neutral...
