1.8tfanatic,
That small hose is meant to go onto a forward (ie, toward you as you look at the engine) facing vac take off point on your carb.

If you have a 34 Pict 3 (1600 twin port standard fitment) it goes on the right (passenger for LHD cars) hand fitting. If you have a blank boss there, you have had a carb swap and need to drill.

What carby do you have? On the left hand side of the float bowl (between the throttle arm and where your carby fuel hose fitting is) is where the carby model designation is.

Also, have a look at the "stock 34 Pict 3" topic. Piccies in there.

Hi,
Volkenstein is talking about the small vacuum line that goes to the carburetor.
This hose, if disconnected, it will take a few seconds for the control valve to work..
if its connected to the proper port, the control valve should work virtually  [immediately] as soon as You take your hand off the gear shift lever.
if its connected to a port with too much vacuum, the clutch and servo will really thump into gear...

so, connecting that small hose shouldn't make any difference to the gears grating/crunching....  IMHO... [correct me if i'm wrong]

The large vacuum hoses are the ones that suck the clutch in and out etc..
it sounds like the clutch servo arm needs to be adjusted..

On my carb there are two little vacuum ports the one on the left is already used. The one on the right is open!! so i have to take a look at the clutch servo!

1.8Tfanatic,
Open? what does that mean? You've said on the left, is this on the left of the carb and facing left? That's vacuum advance. If you have one that faces toward you (and only one and it's a single port engine) that's your CV feed.

Did you look at the piccie in the post I mentioned?

Also, read 1961Decepticon's topic. There is a photo of his setup there and he's going to be changing it!
