Technical / Auto stick knob replacement
Last post by nursejim - 03 November 2024, 19:15
Hi all, this is my first post.
I have a 1968 beetle and the shift stick knob has broken, I've tried to 'unscrew' but no joy? Is there a particular way of removing?

Also, does anyone have a picture of the gear gate I can stick on the dash?

Many thanks in anticipation

You may try adjusting your shifter. Here is a link to the adjusting procedure here on VWAR.

Technical / Reverse Lights on in 1!
Last post by Turk.380 - 28 October 2024, 21:22
Hey AS Volks.. 1st time posting here.
I have a 1970 Ghia Autostick.  Everything is pretty stock & original. Runs and drives super well!
Yesterday I thought I would tackle getting the reverse lights working. I had previously jumped the connectors and confirmed the lights light up.. so I assumed the switch was bad.

I replaced the switch with a tested-good one.. still nothing!
so I tested the old switch on a lark.. and it worked!! what?

Finally, after it started to get dark in the shop in the evening I noticed something... the reverse lights are coming on when I'm in 1, but not in any other gear!!?? so for months, and hundreds of miles.. I've just been driving around with my reverse lights on almost all of the time and no one told me!

So, why would this be?? I can't think of a possible cause.

any guesses?

Also, question #2: does anyone know a part # or have a source for the ATF temp warning bulb socket? I'm trying to solve a problem with my blinker indicator, and if I could find the ATF type socket I would be able to just run a normal modern 3-pin flasher instead of the "black box" which has +12v back-fed through the stock bulb.

I had the hesitation just off idle and changed the idle jet to a larger one and that took care of the problem. My engine is a 1776 and I went from the standard 55 idle jet to a 60, still had a slight hesitation and went to a 65 and that solved the issue. It's a 2 minute job to swap out the idle jet. Worth a shot.

Well, after all the things I tried/checked on, it turned out to be the spark plug wires. Nothing to do with the autostick components.

Although, I probably needed to change: dizzy cap, rotor, plugs, condenser, points, check servo, check valves, add Petronix coil, clean out manifold heat risers, check for vac leaks, clean fuel tank, clean original 34 pict 3, re-time... ANYWAY.

Next time I'll start with the wires!

I saw that sb001 (on The Samba) had a similar issue:

"wanting to stall' after engine is completely warmed up when stopped at a light in gear.

I was hoping he would chime in and enlighten me on what he did.

BTW - I apologize for droning about this problem.

Cleaned the inside of gas tank and the in-tank sock. Plugged in new condenser... no change.

Runs really well and idles just as well.

Starts the intermittent in-gear stumbling (to the point of almost stalling) after warm.

Could I be back at a coil issue?

FWIW... as mentioned earlier, I have a Petronix Flamethrower 3.0 ohm coil.

Will also try swapping the condenser out and see what happens.

Thought I had the in-gear at idle stumble licked... of course not! Hadn't had an issue for 5-6 weeks though.

Any other ideas? I'll check the in-tank filter sock next.

Is it possible this could be an electrical problem?
